Dental Hygiene at
Camden Place Dental Practice
Your gum health depends on proper oral hygiene. Keeping your teeth free from plaque will protect your gums from bacteria and help prevent gum disease. Regular interdental cleaning, like flossing, combined with effective brushing, will control most plaque buildup on your teeth.
Plaque that’s hard to reach can turn into tartar, a stubborn substance that a toothbrush can’t remove. Hygienists can eliminate tartar buildup around the gum line through a professional cleaning, known as a scale and polish, leaving your teeth and gums free from bacteria.
Maintaining your gum health and protecting your smile from gum disease
What is gum disease?
Gum disease begins when your immune system reacts to bacteria in plaque near the gum tissue. This causes the gums to become inflamed, leading to bleeding during brushing.
This early stage, known as gingivitis, is reversible with regular visits to the hygienist.
If untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more serious form of gum disease.
Periodontitis occurs when bacteria invade the gum tissue, triggering an immune response that breaks down the gums. As the gums recede, pockets form between the gum and tooth. Over time, this can lead to bone loss and potentially tooth loss.
Even in the later stages, gum disease often has few noticeable symptoms, which is why it can go untreated. While periodontitis cannot be cured, it can be managed effectively with specialised periodontal treatment.
What’s involved in a hygiene appointment?
Hygienists are clinicians trained in diagnosing and treating gum disease. At the start of the appointment, the hygienist will carry out a full assessment of your gums, checking for any inflammation and bleeding.
The main part of the appointment is the scale and polish, a very thorough clean that involves using a focused jet of water to loosen tartar deposits before using special tools to scale the deposits away. Lastly, a paste is used to polish the surfaces and leave the teeth feeling silky and smooth.
Airflow
Our AirFlow™ treatment is designed to remove surface stains caused by red wine, tea, coffee, and smoking.
While it’s not a tooth whitening treatment, AirFlow™ can significantly brighten your teeth, leaving your mouth feeling fresh, clean, and noticeably more vibrant.
This full-mouth cleansing treatment uses a stream of tiny carbonated particles and water pressure to gently clean the surface of your teeth and between them.
AirFlow™ can also be used as a pre-whitening treatment and is a revolutionary way to maintain a healthy, radiant smile.
